VARNUM – — In a Friday night matchup featuring 40 total fouls, Dale’s girls outlasted Varnum 50-38.

There were 25 first-half fouls — 13 Varnum and 12 Dale —as the hosts took a 25-22 lead into intermission.

The third quarter ended in a tie at 33 and Dale went on a 17-5 splurge over the last eight minutes.

Varnum was charged with11 second-half fouls to just four for Dale.

The Lady Pirates were 32 of 44 from the free-throw line for 72.7 percent. Varnum was 10 of 15 from thc charity stripe.

Claire Chastain, Dale’s top scorer with 16, was 7 of 8 from the line. Mikayla Rutland, who finished with 10 points, hit 7-of-8 free throws.

Lindy Nowakowski of Dale chalked up 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Rutland claimed 8 rebounds while Chastain finished with 4 rebounds and 2 blocks.

It was by far the most Dale free throws in any game this season.

Tuesday night, Dale will play host to Vanoss, ranked ninth in Class 2A.

Boys

Propelled by a 27-point outing from Logan Woodruff, Dale captured its sixth straight victory with a 63-54 conquest of Varnum.

Woodruff was 5 of 5 from the charity stripe as Dale went 17 of 22.

Gabe Gouge put in 11 points for Dale and teammate Trae Thompson tossed in 10.

Brady Johnson had 6 points, hitting all four of his free throws.

Gouge posted all of his 11 points in the opening half.

Varnum received 18 points from Martell Davis, who claimed four of his squad’s 10 3-point field goals.

Ryan Straker had three 3-pointers for Varnum and Chase Lena added two.

The Pirates raised their record to 12-10.
