PRAGUE—The Prague Red Devils and Lady Red Devils opened up their post season hoops play on Saturday night and came away with a split over visiting Vian. The Lady Red Devils captured the Class 3A-District 4 title with a 41-13 win while the Red Devils dropped a 49-32 decision to the Wolverines.

In the opener, the Lady Red Devils relied on the defense to carry them into next week's regional tournament. “I was really proud of our defensive effort tonight,” said Prague head coach Benny Burnett. “If our press hadn't have worked, that could have led to some trouble.”

It worked. Prague held Vian to just two made free throws in the first half. They held a 9-1 first quarter lead and increased it to 20-2 by the end of the half.

On offense, Prague's attack was balanced. Five different Lady Red Devils scored in the opening half, including nine points from freshman Chantae Embry. Embry was the only player on the court to reach double figure scoring in the game. She finished with 17 points.

Vian finally hit a field goal with 6:27 left in the third quarter when Deanetta Moon hit a trey. That cut the lead to 20-5 in a very low scoring third quarter. A combined total of nine points were scored in the frame. “We didn't shoot the ball very well and Vian made it difficult for us to get in rhythm,” said Burnett. “They play with a lot of patience and slow the game down.”

Vian didn't have a scorer that reached more than tghree points. They had four girls finish with three points apiece.

Prague will now play host to the Purcell Lady Dragons next Thursday night in the opening round of regional play. They will tip at 6:30 pm.

In the boys game, the Wolverines jumped on Prague early and the Red Devils had difficulty finding any kind of offensive firepower.

Vian hit three treys in the opening quarter to take a 14-7 lead. Prague tried to chip away in the second quarter but were only able to cut the deficit to 19-14 by the end of the half. The Red Devils hit just six field goals in the half while struggling with turnovers. Brady Thorpe was the lone bright spot, hitting two treys in the half.

The start of the third quarter spelled Prague's doom. The Red Devils went scoreless for the first 5:39 of the quarter and fell behind 27-14 before Isaac Bloomer scored on an old fashioned three point play. His free throw made the count 27-17with 2:21 but that was the last gasp for Prague.

Vian pulled away throughout the remainder of the game and had its biggest lead of 46-25 with 3:17 left in the game.

The Wolverines Kaleb Glass led all scorers with 13 points. Javier Ramos added 11 and Ben Spyers hit for 10 for Vian.

Thorpe led Prague with nine points while gage Cantrell added seven. Ray Embry and Bloomer each had six for the Red Devils.

Prague will move into the consolation bracket in next week's regional tournament. They will face Harding Fine Arts next Thursday at 3:00 pm, in Prague.
