OKLAHOMA CITY —Coach Larry James knew Shawnee’s first Class 6A regional tournament appearance in eight years was going to be a challenge.
And it was Friday as six SHS entrants stayed alive while five teammates were eliminated at Southmoore High School.
Caleb Nahmahpeah, Shawnee’s 113-pounder who went 1-1 Friday with a fall and a 3-0 loss, needs just one more win today to advance to next week’s state tournament in Oklahoma City.
Three Shawnee wrestlers — Issac Bertram (106), Jose Cervantes (132) and Coby Ezell (285) — went 2-1 on the day and need two more victories to move to state.
Bertram pinned Norman’s Balyn Dye and Edmond North’s Connor McBride but was also pinned by Deer Creek’s Jason Gilbert.
SHS entrants Kylin Workman (145) and Garrett Hopkins (220) went 1-1 and also need two more regional victories to keep their seasons alive.
Bowing out of the regional were Shawnee entrants Justus Sparks (120), EJ Chotkey (126), Donavan Bertram (138) Ivan Green (152) and Dyson Tully (160).
Today’s consolation action will begin at noon.
“We wrestled really hard,” Shawnee coach Larry James said. “That’s all we can expect of them. We will see how it goes tomorrow.”
