HENRYETTA — Balanced double-figure scoring was the key for Meeker Friday night as it outlasted Pocola 63-57 in a Class 4A regional losers’ bracket matchup.

Derek Carter of Pocola led all scorers with 34 but none of his Pocola teammates had more than 8 points.

Contrastingly, Meeker (12-12) received double-figure scoring from Josh Whitfield (20), Brett Roach (15) and Cale Coleman (12). Whitfield had 18 points in the second half as Meeker outscored Pocola 39-33.

Meeker hit only 50 percent (14 of 28) of its free throws, while Pocola was 10 of 12.

“We got in foul trouble early but we played fairly well,” Meeker coach Evan Smith said.

Meeker faces another test at 8 tonight against the loser of Friday’s Beggs-Star Spencer game..


Shakyrah Gladness, a 6-foot, 3-inch post player, tallied 15 points as Pocola blitzed Meeker 53-22.

Ashley VanSchuyer posted 6 points for Meeker while Melanie Cope came in with 5.

Meeker (12-13) will attempt to keep its season alive with a 1:30 elimination challenge today against Star Spencer.
