PRAGUE—The Prague Lady Red Devils are a win away from winning the Class 3A Region-4 title by virtue of their 48-28 whipping of the Purcell Lady Dragons, Friday night.
Defense was the story on this night. Prague smothered the Lady Dragons in the first quarter to take a commanding 18-2 lead into the final three quarters.
“I was really pleased with the defense tonight,” said Prague head coach Benny Burnett. “Chloe (McClendon) did an excellent job on their best player (Haylee Swayze).” Swayze scored 12 points in the contest, but earned every last one of them.
The Prague offense was equally good in the opening quarter. What Chantae Embry didn't get inside, Macyn Anderson got from the perimeter. The two combined for 14 of the first 18 Lady Red Devil points. Embry powered her way inside for six points, while Anderson hit two treys and another jumper to score eight.
“We were really good in the first quarter,” said Burnett. “Our intensity and our crowd were excellent.”
The two teams played even in the second quarter with Prague taking a 26-10 lead into the half. They pushed the lead to its peak of 37-13 on a McClendon steal and layup with 3:47 left in the third quarter.
The Lady Red Devils led 37-16 after the third and then coasted to the 20-point win.
Embry led all scorers with 18 while Anderson added 13 for Prague.
Swayze led Purcell in scoring with her hard fought dozen.
The Lady Red Devils will now face Mt. St. Mary's, Monday night, for the regional championship. The game will tip at 6:30 pm. With the win over Purcell, Prague has secured a spot in next weekend's Area-4 playoffs which will be held in Checotah.
