OWASSO — With 7.8 seconds remaining and Dale clinging to a 42-all tie with Rejoice Christian, coach Jeff Edmonson drew up a play on the sideline.

The stratedy worked perfectly as Dallen Forsythe threw the inbounds pass to Trae Thompson on the back side. Thompson hit a layup, giving the Pirates a 44-42 lead.

Rejoice Christian proceeded to miss a 3-point shot at the final buzzer, giving Dale a Class 2A regional consolation championship Monday afternoon.

“I’m proud of the whole team,” Edmonson said. “They executed the play perfectly.”

By improving its record to 17-12, Dale earned a berth in Thursday’s area tournament at Catoosa. Edmonson’s troops will play at 8 p.m. against the loser of Monday’s regional elimination game between Ketchum and Nowata. The Pirates must win Thursday, Friday and Saturday to advance to next week’s state tournament.

Gabe Gouge finished as Dale’s top scorer with 13, followed by Brady Johnson with 11 and Logan Woodruff with 9.

Dale led the entire game after bolting to a 24-12 halftime advantage. Rejoice Christian got back in the contest by outscoring Dale 17-8 in the third quarter.

The Pirates were 4 of 11 from the free-throw line, while Rejoice Christain was 8 of 11.

Dale’s largest lead was 12 points.

Dale defeated Rejoice Christian 54-45 in recent district play.
