CHECOTAH—The Lady Red Devils will have to wait another day to see if they will punch a ticket into the Class 3A State Tournament as the undefeated Hartshorne Lady Miners handed Prague a 54-34 loss Friday night in the Area 4 title game.
“We were outplayed and out-hustled tonight,” said Prague head coach Benny Burnett.
It was anybody's game at the half. Hartshorne led 21-14 at intermission, but three treys by Lady Miner Alex Miller, in the opening two and a half minutes of the third quarter, proved to be deadly for the Lady Red Devils. Miller hit back to back increasing the lead to 27-14 with 7:16 showing on the clock, then hit her third at the 5:36 mark keeping the Lady Miner 13-point advantage of 32-19.
“The three's at the beginning of the third quarter really changed the game,” said Burnett. “They (Hartshorne) are a very good team with lots of girls that can score.”
Hartshorne had two players in double figures, Jaycee Kitchall had 17 while Miller finished with 15.
Prague's biggest weapon, freshman Chantae Embry, tried to carry the lady Red Devils into next weekend's State Tournament on her back. Embry scored a game-high 25 points and hauled in 14 rebounds, but received little scoring help throughout the game. There were only four other field goals scored by Prague in the game — by four different players.
“We talk about it all of the time – that there will come a time when we can't rely on Chantae alone,” said Burnett. “Good thing is we are playing for the exact same thing tomorrow – a chance to get there.”
Prague will face unranked Hugo tonight at 6:30 pm in Checotah. The Lady Red Devils come into the game with a 23-3 record. The Lady Buffaloes hold a 17-10 mark and are coming into tonight's game with a 45-31 over Heavener on Friday night.
