OKLAHOMA CITY – Kristen Gilbert and Kenzie Yort took first in No. 1 doubles and Kayla Garza and Hayden Powell topped No. 2 doubles to help the Shawnee girls tennis team secure a second place finish at Western Heights Saturday.
Gilbert and Yort beat Ardmore 6-1, 6-2 to finish off their winning day after beating Western Heights 6-2, 6-2 and Harding 6-1, 6-3.
Garza and Powell had a little tighter of competition, but manged to escape unsacthed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Choctaw in their final mathc. They beat Western Heights 6-0, 6-0 and escaped Mustang 6-3, 7-5.
Karsyn Reed finished third in No. 2 singles after putting up three straight wins following a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Cora Hernandez of Midwest City to start the day. Reed beat Nancy Nguyen of Mustang 7-5, 7-5 in the third place match and also beat Choctaw's Brook Foster 6-0, 6-1 and Western Height's Jenny Rios 6-1, 6-4.
Olivia Stobbe had a 6-3, 6-7 setback to Harley Austin of Midwest City to open her play and came through with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Western Heights' Ximena Sanches. She lost her next two matches to finish sixth.
The girls will play at the Ada tournament on Friday.
