Wichita State senior-to-be A.J. Hawkins has transferred to Oklahoma Baptist University where he will finish his college basketball career next season.
Hawkins, the son of Susan Hawkins and the late Ananias Hawkins, is the younger brother of former Bison standout Adam Hawkins, who made a name for himself as a starter in reaching 1,169 career points.
“A.J. is a great addition to our team,” said Bison coach Doug Tolin. “He has a chance to be a really special player. He definitely points us in the right direction for next year.”
OBU was 28-5 last season and made its ninth consecutive NAIA Sweet 16 appearance after winning 20 Sooner Athletic Conference games.
A 6-5 guard, Hawkins started 29 of 34 games at Wichita State in his junior season, averaging 6.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and one steal per game. He had a high of 18 points against Texas Tech and also had 15 points against Northern Arizona.
Hawkins played two seasons at St. Bonaventure, starting every game as a sophomore. He averaged 12.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and one steal per game and averaged 14.1 points per game in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
He had a career high of 29 points and 12 rebounds against Duquesne and also had big scoring games against Ohio (25), Dayton (24) and Temple (23).
As a freshman at St. Bonaventure, he was twice named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.
Hawkins is a graduate of Millwood High School, where he averaged 22.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 4.2 blocked shots per game.
Hawkins joins a Bison team that returns starter Garrett Steinmetz and second-team All-American Nate Brumfield.
