With four Tuesday night victories, the Big 12 Conference ran its basketball record to 23-0 against non-conference foes. The Big 12 and the Big East are the only two conferences with undefeated records.
The most impressive Big 12 victories have come from Kansas, via a 57-55 decision over Memphis Tuesday night, and Texas Tech’s 64-60 decision over visiting Oregon State Sunday night.
Oklahoma, with a 72-61 win over Louisiana-Monroe Tuesday, has captured 14 straight non-conference home games and 72 of its last 74.
The Sooners don’t have another home game until a Dec. 2 date with Arkansas of the Southeastern Conference. Oklahoma will also entertain Pac-10 entrant Arizona on Dec. 6.
• When Tiny Gallon (6-9, 290) pulled down 14 rebounds against Mount St. Mary’s, it was the most boards by a Sooner freshman — in his debut — since 1972. That 37-year-ago feat was turned in by Alvan Adams, who went on to have an outstanding NBA career.
• Both OU head coach Jeff Capel and leading scorer (24) Willie Warren said it was no surprise the Sooners experienced turnover problems Tuesday — considering their Monday practice session. OU turned the ball over nine times in the opening half, including four straight possessions.
“You play how you practice,” Warren said. “We just need to take better care of the ball. It limits our opportunities to score.”
• Only eight Sooners got in the game after 13 played in a season-opening 95-71 victory over Mount St. Mary’s.
• The Oklahoma Baptist University men, off to a 3-0 start — all home games — will travel to MidAmeria Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan., Saturday for a 4 p.m. game. MidAmerica shocked OBU in last season’s national tournament.
The Bison are averaging 112.7 points with five players in double figures. Nate Brumfield heads the assault at 21.7.
• OBU’s women, also 3-0 but with just one home victory, will resume play Friday. Coach John McCullough’s squad will take on Central Oklahoma at 11:30 a.m. at the Southwestern Classic in Weatherford.
• The Sooner Athletic Conference openers for both OBU squads are slated for Dec. 3 against visiting Oklahoma City University.
• Oklahoma State, 1-0 entering Tuesday’s game with Southern, will serve as a host to North Texas at 1 p.m. Saturday, then entertain Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
