Oklahoma Baptist’s basketball squads garnered lofty rankings in the NAIA Division I basketball coaches’ Top 25 preseason poll released Monday.
The women of head coach John McCullough are ranked third and the men of head coach Doug Tolin are ranked fourth.
Coming off a NAIA Fab Four, 32-5 season, the Lady Bison were the highest-ranked team without a first-place vote. OBU received 261 points in the poll.
Defending NAIA champion Union is ranked No. 1 with nine first-place votes and 280 poll points, followed by Vanguard with two first-place votes and 272 points in the poll.
Also in the Top 25 are Sooner Athletic Conference members Oklahoma City at eighth, Southern Nazarene at 15th, and Lubbock Christian at 19th.
Wayland Baptist and Rogers State, also SAC members, received votes in the poll.
OBU will also play No. 24 Evangel and vote-getters William Jewell and Langston.
The OBU men, 28-5 last season, received two first-0place votes in the poll and finished with 278 points in the preseason poll.
Robert Morris University is ranked No. 1, carting off three first-place votes and 301 poll points. Mountain State was second with two first-place votes and 297 poll points. Fresno Pacific led all schools with four first-place votes, but was fourth with 287 poll points.
Also in the Top 25 were Sooner Athletic Conference members Rogers State in sixth place and Oklahoma Christian in 16th place. Southern Nazarene and John Brown received points in the poll.
Only one other Bison opponent is ranked heading into the season. MidAmerica Nazarene is ranked 22nd.
Both OBU squads will launch their seasons Friday, Nov. 6, at home. The Lady Bison will entertain William Jewell College at 5:30 p.m. with the men playing at 7 p.m.
