It wasn’t pretty but Oklahoma Baptist took the first game in the crucial three-game series with St. Gregory’s 12-2 Tuesday in mercy-rule fashion.
The teams combined for nine errors. The game, scheduled for nine innings, lasted just seven.
OBU, needing to win as many games as Rogers State this week to earn the sixth and final spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, narrowed its magic number to two.
St. Gregory’s jumped out on top in the top of the third with two runs on a single by Landon Boler.  But that was all the Cavaliers would get off Tyler Duran (9-4) who held SGU to six hits while collecting seven strikeouts.
The Bison finally solved Jake Merritt in the fourth inning, tying the game with two runs on a solo home run by Chad Dawkins and an RBI single by Josh Kirkpatrick. That was the start of 12 unanswered runs and the end of shutout innings for the Cavalier pitching staff.
The Bison took the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Josh Collazo and a wild pitch that scored Dawkins for a 4-2 Bison lead.
OBU added two more in the sixth on an error and an RBI single by Dawkins for a 6-2 lead.
The Bison ended the game with six runs in the bottom of the seventh.
With the bases loaded, Justin Trejo reached on catcher’s interference, forcing home a run. Jonathan Carnes and Billy Thomas drew bases-loaded walks to make it 9-2. Two more runs came in on a base hit by Dawkins, making it 11-2.
After Josh Collazo was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, Arin Fowble grounded to first. The throw from Chris Duke to the plate was in time to get Thomas, but the return throw to first squirted away from Jeremy Springer and Dawkins scored on the error to end the game.
SGU had five hits, including two each by Boler and Springer. The Bison had 12 hits in the game with Dawkins and Victor Manzano getting three each while Thomas and Carnes had two apiece.
The Bison (35-17, 14-14) are schedule to play the Cavaliers (8-44, 0-28) Thursday at St. Gregory’s. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start.
