Howard nets 22 points for Lady Cavaliers

St. Gregory’s University started the 2009-10 hoops season on a positive note as the Lady Cavaliers defeated visiting Central Baptist College 88-82 Monday night at W.P. Wood fieldhouse.
Sophomore Jalisa Howard led the Lady Cavs with 22 points, including a 6-of-7 showing at the foul line. Howard connected on eight or her 11 attempts from the field.
Allison Klick and Leticia Silva came off the SGU bench to contribute 17 points and 15 points, respectively, and Silva led the Lady Cavs in boards with eight.
Carletta Hernandez, also off the bench, added 11 points for St. Gregory’s. Klick hit five of six attempts from three-point range, and Lacey Craig had a 100-percent (2-of-2) night at the charity stripe.
Craig and Heather Anderson came away with seven points each. The Lady Cavs were 8-of-12 from outside the arch.
Amber Garrett led CBC’s Lady Mustangs with 20 points and eight rebounds. Garrett also led the game in steals with three.
Britney Nealy contributed 17 points for the Lady Mustangs, and Casey Williams and LaTrina Brandon pitched in with 12 each.
All total, the Lady Cavs were 30-of-57 from the field and 20-of-31 from on foul shots. The Lady Mustangs were 25-of-59 and 24-of-32.
SGU suffered 27 turnovers to CBC’s 15.
Monday’s victory snapped a 28-game losing skid for SGU’s women. The Lady Cavs won their 2008-09 opener before finishing the season 1-28.
The Lady Cavaliers will take part in the Bacone College Classic Friday and Saturday in Muskogee. They will face Haskell University at 6 p.m. Friday, and will then take on the host Bacone Lady Warriors at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The St. Gregory’s University men’s basketball team will start their 2009-10 campaign Thursday opposite Paul Quinn University in Dallas, Texas. The game will tip off at 7 p.m.
The Cavaliers finished their 2008-09 season at 2-27, losing their last 15 games.
