St. Gregory’s Cavaliers, coming off a 2-27 season, will attempt to snap a 15-game losing skid as they open their 2009-10 basketball campaign tonight.
The Cavs will face Paul Quinn University at 7 p.m. in Dallas, Texas.
SGU went 1-21 against Sooner Athletic Conference opponents last year.
In this year’s preseason SAC coaches poll, the Cavaliers are picked to finish last in the 12-team field.
Neighboring Oklahoma Baptist was given 10 first-place votes and picked to finish at the top of the conference.
This year’s 19-member St. Gregory’s team includes only three seniors — Jade Carter, Josh Coulter and Sam Stuart.
Coulter led the Cavaliers in 2008-09 with 317 total points through 29 games. Coulter, from Grand Prairie, Texas, hit 119 of his 282 shots from the field, and was 27-of-58 from three-point range and 52-of-71 from the foul line.
Carter hit 114 of 335 attempt from the field, and was 71-of-200 from outside the arch. Carter, from El Reno, was 6-of-10 from the free throw line.
More than half of the team are newcomers, including freshmen Patrick Bryan, John Clark, Fayzon Richey and Brock Vorwald. There are four redshirt freshmen — Brandon Butler, Bryant Florie, Joshua Hendrickson and Michael Shields.
Justin Chambers, a freshman, returns to the Cavaliers this season, as well as sophomore Clay Williamson and juniors Eric Landess and Alex Moorehead.
Moorehead scored 205 total points for SGU last season through a 71-of-232 performance from the field and a 32-of-54 performance at the charity stripe.
Other new faces include sophomores Chris Dean, Ryan Florie and Dominique Johnson, and junior Ricardo Rose.
The Cavaliers will take part in the Northwestern Oklahoma State Classic Nov. 13 and 14 before playing an exhibition game Nov. 18 in Little Rock, Ark. They will open SAC play Dec. 3 by hosting Mid-America Christian at 8 p.m. at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse.
