Red-hot John Brown upends third-ranked OBU

John Brown shot 80 percent from three-point range in the second half and carried off a 78-71 victory over third-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University Saturday in Sooner Athletic Conference men’s basketball action.

The Golden Eagles hit 8 of 10 from beyond the arch in the second half with Coleson Rakestraw hitting three of four and Adrian Miller all three of his second-half attempts.

“They made everything,” said OBU Coach Doug Tolin. “They played great.”

The game saw 16 lead changes and 10 ties, but a 9-0 JBU run after DeAngelo McIntosh fouled out gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good, 71-65, with 3:31 to go. McIntosh had six points and six rebounds.

Derick Echols had two baskets and Jacobi Isham one in the final three minutes but couldn’t get the needed stops to key a comeback.

Heath McKay scored 22 points before being injured under the basket. He returned to action but didn’t score in the last 10 minutes. McKay connected on four of his nine shots from 3-point range ndwent 7-of-15 overall from the floor.

Emmanuel Wilson had 11 points and Isham 10 for OBU.

“I wish we could have had all our guys at the end,” Tolin said.

Rakestraw led the Golden Eagles with 22 points.

OBU went 50 percent (26-of-52) from the floor, including 7-of-16 from 3-point range. John Brown also shot well, going 29-of-50 for 58 percent. The Golden Eagles finished at 13-of-22 on their long-range attempts.

OBU out-rebounded the hosts 30-27.

Now 18-3 overall and 11-3 in the SAC, the Bison host Oklahoma City Thursday at 8 p.m.

Oklahoma Baptist fell back to .500 on the season with the SAC loss.

OBU never led and trailed by as many as 11 in the first half and saw the final score as the biggest deficit of the day as JBU finished the game on an 8-0 run.

JBU had a 52-42 lead with 6:18 to play, but OBU reeled off a 7-2 run with five points coming from Bridget Reynolds.

Reynolds led OBU with 14 points, while Aston Pittman added 11 and Lillian Prince 10. Prince had nine rebounds and Reynolds eight as the Lady Bison had a 43-41 edge in rebounding.

OBU was out-scored 20-7 at the line despite shooting 87.5 percent for the game from the stripe.

The Lady Bison didn’t fare well from the field, hitting only 20-of-65 shots for 30.9 percent. OBU was 5-of-18 from 3-point range.

John Brown was 20-of-56 from the field, including 5-of-22 from beyond the line.

Sierra Shipley led JBU with 15 points.

Now 11-11 on the season and 7-7 in the SAC, the Lady Bison host Oklahoma City Thursday at 6 p.m.
