Oklahoma Baptist opened its women’s basketball season Friday with a 71-42 win over William Jewell in the Baker University Classic in Baldwin City, Kan., after trailing at halftime.
The Lady Bison out-scored the Cardinals 43-11 in the second half with a 55-percent shooting half. WJC had a 31-28 lead at the half.
OBU got it done defensively, blocking seven shots and holding the Cardinals to 29 percent shooting. Jewell had scored 91 points in its season opener.
OBU point guard Ashley Harrell had three of those blocks to go with eight points and six assists.
Gabriell Mattox led the Lady Bison with 15 points in her OBU debut, hitting five of six shots and picking up four steals. Taujhnae Travis had 14 points and Jessi Donnel finished with 10 points and two blocked shots.
The 14 points by Travis puts her at 999 for her career heading into Saturday afternoon’s game against Baker.
Erica Ferguson led the Cardinals with 16 points.
OBU shot 48 percent from the field for the game.
