The Bristow Purple Pirates used the big play to bounce the Bethel Wildcats from playoff consideration Friday night.
Kiantae Wilson ran for 114 yards on 27 carries and scored both second-half touchdowns on runs of 20 and 9 yards as Bristow knocked off Bethel 21-7 in a District 3A-4 clash.
The loss concluded the Wildcats’ season at 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the district. Bethel was seeking its first host berth in school history with a victory, but the Wildcats were forced to settle for fifth place, meaning they were the odd men out for a playoff spot.
Bristow, 5-5 and 4-2, took a 7-0 first-quarter advantage while the Wildcats blew two great first-half scoring opportunities.
“Bristow has a talented football team. Our kids competed, played hard and never quit,” said first-year Bethel head coach Eddie Paul. “They had a couple of big plays that hurt us and we had some turnovers. We weren’t able to sustain drives.”
The big Pirate playmaker on the night was Jay Woodberry, who hauled in three passes for 81 yards, including a big 47-yarder for a TD off a toss from Adam Lomenick in the opening quarter. Woodberry later caught two big passes on Bristow’s go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter.
Twice, the tall, sure-handed Woodberry snagged passes in tight coverages of 21 yards — on a third-and-7 situation and a 13-yarder off a second-and-11 — which enabled the Pirates to set up shop at the Bethel 20-yard line.
Wilson scored on the next play from the 20.
“Their great big receiver made some fantastic catches. They went over the top and he (Woodberry) was able to pull them in,” Paul said.
In the first half, the Wildcats got a 45-yard run from Justin Vermillion to the Bristow 37. But Bethel turned the ball over on downs at the 30.
Vermillion led all rushers with 133 yards on 18 carries.
The Wildcats later had another golden opportunity to put points on the board when they recovered a fumble at he Pirate 27. Kaleb Stewart made the tackle on the fumble and Eric Coy made the recovery.
But a 6-yard loss on a first-down sack and a 5-yard loss on second down left Bethel unable to capitalize.
Bristow then sealed the game with a 52-yard drive which was capped by Wilson’s 9-yard scoring run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats had another chance at putting points on the board in the fourth, driving from their 30 to the Pirate 31, but a pass play on fourth down came up one yard short.
For Bethel, Stephen Bedwell added 31 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for 23 yards. Clint Duncan was 7-of-16 passing for 62 yards and Tyler Rose snatched three aerials for 19 yards. Jaycee Dismuke had a pair of catches for 20 yards.
“I’m proud of our seniors. They laid the foundation for the future,” said Paul. “All of our kids played hard the whole season. It was a great effort. We can build on that for the future.”
Dismuke, Duncan, Bedwell, Coy, Blake Garrett, Vincent Dyer, Andrew Bybee and Sam Byers - the Wildcats’ eight seniors - appeared in their final game.
