Oklahoma’s 2010 high school football postseason is chugging right along, but only two of the Tri-County area’s teams have managed to stay aboard.
Tecumseh and Prague were bumped from the list with first-round playoff losses last week, leaving Maud and Seminole to carry the Tri-County banner. Six of the Tri-County’s 10 teams were unable to advance past the regular season — Shawnee, Bethel, McLoud, Meeker, Chandler and Macomb.
Tecumseh, a Class 4A representative, ended its season at 5-6 via a 21-7 loss to host Clinton last Friday night. Prague lost its Class 3A first-round game at Newcastle, 35-7, thus ending the Red Devils’ run at 4-7.
The chance to reach the second round of the postseason is something of great importance for both Class C Maud and Class 3A Seminole. For Seminole’s Chieftains — who defeated host Keys-Park Hill 24-8 last week — it means the Chieftains have further cemented their continual presence in Oklahoma’s playoff scene. Seminole, under head coach Mike Snyder, has carried this out every year since 1986.
For Maud, it means the Tigers were finally able to shrug a nagging monkey from their backs. The Tigers, despite four consecutive District C-4 crowns, have had a tough time dealing with the C-3 representatives they have faced each year in the first round.
Not any more.
After falling to C-3 foe Covington-Douglas in 2009, following a perfect 10-0 regular season, Maud broke the curse with a 46-40 edging of C-3 Medford last Friday night at Derrel Pearcy Stadium.
The Tigers are now 10-1 as they prepare to host Shattuck at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Shattuck’s Indians, also 10-1, defeated Ryan (38-30) in the first round last week.
The Chieftains, 9-2, will head to defending 3A champion Tulsa Cascia Hall for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday. Cascia Hall’s Commandos have won three consecutive titles, and in their quest for a fourth they registered a decisive 21-0 defeat of Class 4A’s No. 4 Glenpool in Week 2 of the regular season.
The Commandos topped Inola in the first round last week, 47-21.
Cascia Hall’s only defeat this season was a 34-27 decision to Tulsa Holland Hall in Week 1.
As a 4A competitor last year, Seminole struggled through the regular season but ultimately reached the playoffs. The Chieftains fell to Weatherford, 34-14, in the first round and ended their 2009 season at 4-7.
Seminole made short work of its non-district slate this season, going 3-0 with a combined three-game score of 120-20. The Chieftains dropped their first two District 3A-8 contests, however, each by only one point. Seminole lost to Valliant (14-13) in Week 3, then fell to Stigler, 28-27 in overtime, the following week.
From there, Snyder’s crew finished their regular run in style with a 5-0 effort that put them at 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the district. Seminole was third in 3A-8 after the 10-week regular campaign.
