McLoud secured the elusive first win of the season Thursday, defeating the host Santa Fe South Saint Bernards 42-26 in a District 4A-2 clash.
The Redskins rushed for 315 yards on the night with quarterback Corey Wiley leading the charge with 95 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Wiley also threw for two scores — 10 yards to Kyle Abbott and 40 yards to Travis Carroll — while compiling 126 aerial yards.
Carroll caught all but one of Wiley’s offerings.
“Travis Carroll had a heck of a ball game,” said McLoud coach Eric Cardin, whose Redskins are now 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the district.
“We’re fortunate and happy to get out with a win,” Cardin said. “That’s our best game of the year. They’re (the Saint Bernards) better than people give them credit for.”
Santa Fe South rushed for 115 yards and passed for 176. The loss drops the Saint Bernards to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in the district.
A 21-13 lead gave way to a narrow 21-19 halftime cushion for McLoud as the hosts capitalized on a late second-quarter fumble.
Wiley’s rushing scores were 1 yard, 25 yards and 2 yards.
In other 4A-2 contests Thursday, Tecumseh defeated Cushing, 21-19; No. 4 Glenpool swamped Cleveland, 54-27; and No. 3 Douglass blanked Harrah, 47-0. It was Harrah’s first loss of the year.
Glenpool and Douglass, both 5-0 in the district, are locked in a first-place tie. Harrah is now third, and Cleveland is fourth.
