The Meeker Bulldogs stepped out of District 2A-5 play, but it was anything but a break. The Lexington Bulldogs downed Meeker 19-12 Friday night in a three overtime thriller.
Meeker started off sluggish and didn’t hit pay dirt until the third quarter of play. By then, it was trailing 12-0, thanks to the speed of Lexington’s Travelle Pelkey. Pelkey scored twice in the second quarter to give Lexington a 12-0 halftime lead. First, Pelkey scored on a 20-yard run, then later in the quarter scored from 46 yards out on a sideline fly pattern winged by John Hill.
“We played bad in the first half,” said Meeker head coach Mike Hedge. “We had too many mistakes and made bad decisions.”
The second half was a different story.
The Bulldogs’ defense stiffened and the offense started churning. Meeker took the second-half kickoff and marched 63 B\yards in 14 plays, taking 6:11 off of the third-quarter clock. Jacky Cloud scored on a 3-yard run to cut the Lexington lead in half.
Meeker quarterback Caleb Martin missed the mark on the 2-point pass attempt, which was all too common during the contest. The junior signal caller was 7-of-14 passing and was picked off four times. He totaled 69 yards passing.
His fourth interception proved the most costly. Meeker entered the Lexington red zone halfway through the fourth quarter but Pelkey plucked a pass at his own 10-yard to end the Meeker threat.
But, as it had done all night, Meeker kept fighting and began the next drive with 7:21 left in the contest. Starting at its 23, the Bulldogs went on a 17-play march that chewed up all but :47.7 of the fourth quarter. Ky Davis rumbled up the middle for two yards to knot the score at 12-12, setting up the potential after-touchdown conversion.
Meeker went for two, but Martin’s pass didn’t find its mark, sending the game into overtime.
For the two overtimes, the defenses won out. Each team held the offense at bay, sending the game into a third extra period.
In the third overtime, Lexington needed just one play and the two legs of Pelkey. Pelkey spun off of a would-be tackler and darted 10-yards for the go-ahead score. Jamin Blanchard hit the extra point, giving Lexington a 19-12 lead, with Meeker getting one final chance for the win.
Davis ran for four yards on first down to the Lexington 6-yard line but Cloud fumbled on the next play and the ball was recovered by Lexington’s Chad Forehand to secure the victory.
“Our defense played the best it has played all year,” said Hedge. “But our offense played the worst game of the year. The loss doesn’t hurt us in district play, but we still came out and wanted to win this game.”
Meeker ran the ball 74 times for 310 yards. Cloud finished with 145 yards on 26 carries while Davis finished with 121 yards on 27 totes.
With the loss, Meeker drops to 6-3 overall and remains at 4-2 in district play. Meeker will finish the regular season next Friday as its plays host to Holdenville on senior night.
