The Meeker Bulldogs’ bid to enter the 2010 Class 2A football playoffs was ended by the Holdenville Wolverines, 56-28, Friday night.
Meeker jumped to an early lead, but an injury to quarterback Caleb Martin on the last play of the first half and a Wolverine scoring barrage in the fourth quarter ended the Bulldogs’ season.
“We were beat up and made too many mistakes,” said Meeker head coach Mike Hedge. “We gift-wrapped about 28 points for them.”
Holdenville led 21-20 at the half and 35-28 after three quarters before scoring 21 unanswered points in the final 12 minutes
The Bulldogs took a 12-0 lead after two possessions. Behind the arm of Martin, Meeker opened the game with a 63-yard, 8-play drive to take a 6-0 lead. Martin was 2-for-2 on the drive with throws of 21 and 32 yards. Jacky Cloud capped the drive with a 2-yard score.
Holdenville went three and out, only to see Meeker charge back down the field to go up two scores. Again, Martin was the spark, hitting on three of four passes during the 75-yard march. On the third completion, Martin found Seth Jones from 28 yards out for the score.
The Wolverines drove 69 yards in six plays to cut the lead to 12-7 with 1:27 left in the first quarter. Tre Harjo scored on a 7-yard pitch and catch from Collin Meadors to get on the board.
Meeker drove the ball down to the Holdenville 11-yard line on its next possession, only to see it end on a fumble at the Holdenville 2.
The Bulldog defense responded with a safety to increase the advantage to 14-7 with :13 left in the opening quarter.
On the ensuing possession, Meeker continued the assault on the Wolverines defense, driving inside the red zone for the fourth consecutive time. This time the drive ended on a Martin interception in the Wolverine end zone.
Meadors and the Wolverines needed just three plays to make Meeker pay for the turnover. Meadors found a streaking Denzel Hughes who scored from 64 yards at the 6:48 mark of the half to tie the score at 14.
After a Meeker punt, Holdenville went touchdown hunting again. This time Meadors scored with his legs on a third-and-5 from the Meeker 15-yard line. Holdenville led 21-14 with 2:00 left in the half.
Martin responded on the next drive, finding Dalton Maston for a 25-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to 21-20 with :47 left in the half.
Meeker’s defense held and got the ball back with :08 remaining. Martin hit Drew Graham for a 33-yard connection to the 21-yard line and with a couple of ticks left on the clock, he rolled right and was hit as time expired on the first half clock. Martin was assisted off of the field by coaches and crutches and did not return in the second half.
He finished with 199 yards passing and two touchdown throws.
The start of the second half saw both teams score on their first possession of the half. Holdenville scored first on another Meadors touchdown pass to Hughes. Meeker responded on a 20-yard TD pass by backup quarterback Tyler Jones to Mandrale Henry. Ky Davis scored the two-point conversion to tie the game at 28-28 with 6:18 left in the third.
Davis led the Bulldogs on the ground with 143 yards on 22 carries.
The Bulldogs finish the campaign with an overall record of 6-4 and a 3-4 district mark.
“These kids lined up every week and were in the contest every game,” said Hedge. “They played hard all season.”
