Gritty underdog Seminole played three-time defending state champion Tulsa Cascia Hall to a standstill for one half Friday night before finally succumbing, 14-0, in a Class 3A second-round playoff game at Cascia Hall.
When Casica Hall’s Erik Testa missed his second field-goal attempt of the first half — just 2 seconds before intermission — Seminole earned a scoreless halftime tie. Testa’s opening-half field-goal misses were from 30 and 36 yards.
On Cascia Hall’s first offensive snap of the second half, Commando Patrick Bass went 62 yards off tackle for a touchdown. Testa’s point-after kick made it 7-0 just 12 seconds into the third quarter.
The Commandos quickly regained possession at the Seminole 47 and a 16-yard reception moved the ball to the 27. After opting for a pass play — which failed — on a third-and-1 situation, Testa was wide left on a 37-yard FG attempt.
Four plays later, Garrett Clark’s pass was intercepted by Cascia Hall and returned 28 yards to the Chieftain 30. After a 25-yard pass completion to the 5-yard line, Bass scored on the next play and Testa added the point-after to end the scoring with 4:42 remaining in the third quarter.
Cascia Hall entered the fourth quarter with a 14-0 lead. Seminole was unable to get into the Commando red zone in the second half.
It was a defensive battle throughout the game. Seminole had 162 yards of total offense while the hosts finished with 255.
“There were two good defenses on the field,” Seminole head coach Mike Snyder said. “We just couldn’t get anything going on offense. We had a few drives started but we would always have a mistake.
“Defensively, it’s hard to find a weak link with Cascia Hall. We played hard but when you play a talented team like Cascia Hall, you can’t make mental mistakes.”
Clark connected on 11 of 20 passes (one interception) for 93 yards.
Trevor Martin of Seminole recorded 34 yards on three catches and teammate Tyler O’Daniel caught three passes for 32 yards. Thomas Clark had three receptions for 17 yards.
Adam Kuehner was Seminole’s top rusher with 34 yards on nine carries.
Chieftain Tim Rogers had a fumble recovery. Seminole had two turnovers.
Cascia Hall limited the Chieftains to 69 yards rushing on 36 carries.
Seminole, which had won six straight games prior to Friday night, finishes the season at 9-3.
Snyder and Seminole have advanced to the playoffs 26 consecutive years.
“When you’re Seminole and you lose the last game, you’re always disappointed,” Snyder said.
