Two straight first-round playoff losses didn’t set too well with longtime and successful Seminole head coach Mike Snyder.
Snyder wasn’t about to extend that losing streak as his Chieftains took their Class 3A first-round playoff show on the road Friday night and knocked off Keys-Park Hill, 24-8,
Seminole, in registering its sixth straight victory of the season, advances to a second-round test Friday night at Tulsa Cascia Hall, a first-round winner over Inola. Cascia Hall has captured the last three 3A state championships.
“Keys is a solid, well-coached team,” Snyder said. “It wasn’t a big offensive game but we had some big plays in the passing game.”
Keys was held to its lowest point total of the year while collecting just 155 yards of offense — 64 on the ground and 91 through the air.
Seminole posted four interceptions — two each by Timmy Rogers and Trey Ervin. Ervin had two interceptions in the fourth quarter and Rogers posted one down the stretch.
Seminole led 8-0 at the half, thanks to a goalline stand in the second quarter. Keys failed to score on four snaps inside the Chieftain 5-yard line.
“Rogers made some big plays on the night at outside linebacker and Adam Kuehner, our safety, played really well,” Snyder said.
Kory Brinlee launched the scoring with a 13-yard, second-quarter reception from Garrett Clark. Connor Boots then caught a 2-point conversion pass from Clark for an 8-0 halftime lead.
Keys tied the game at 8 in the third quarter, but a 21-yard reception by Tyler O’Daniel from Clark put Seminole up 14-8 and Brinlee caught the 2-point conversion pass.
The Chieftains tallied their last TD with 10:56 remaining in the game on Brinlee’s 19-yard catch. Thomas Clark concluded the scoring on the conversion pass.
Kuehner led Seminole’s rushing attack with 75 yards on 16 carries. Trenton Newson added 67 yards on 26 carries and Clark added 41 yards on 14 rushes.
O’Daniel caught two passes for 46 yards.
“Our quarterback made two big adjustments on two of his touchdown passes,” Snyder said. “He improvised on them.”
