With the high school football season 42 days on the horizon, Shawnee head coach Billy Brown has numerous dates circled on his calendar.
Two objectives are scheduled for Aug. 3. Equipment will be checked out to prospective gridders at 9 a.m. and free physicals will be administered in the high school gym.
An annual event, the Little Wolves camp, is scheduled for Aug. 5-6. Youngsters from the fourth grade through the eighth grade will be instructed by Shawnee’s high school coaching staff. “Youngsters can check in at the high school locker room at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 5,” Brown said.
The cost is $40 per entrant with the camp slated for 8:30 a.m. until noon both days. Each youngster will receive a T-shirt.
The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association has designated Aug. 10 as the first day of practice. Brown said Shawnee’s footballers will hit the field at 8 a.m.
For the first time in more than a decade, Shawnee’s footballers will be playing in Class 6A instead of 5A.
“It will be different for sure,” Brown said. “It will be quite a challenge with the schedule we have.”
The Wolves will launch the 2010 campaign Friday, Set. 3 against visiting Bartlesville at Jim Thorpe Stadium.
Bartlesville went 9-3 in 2009, losing in the 6A state quarterfinals.
“They didn’t lose very many starters from last season,” Brown said.
Shawnee’s other two non-district contests will be a Sept. 10 home appearance opposite 5A representative Deer Creek and a Sept. 17 matchup at 6A Ponca City.
The Wolves have district home games against Jenks, Muskogee and Southmoore. District road encounters are Norman, Putnam City West, Sapulpa and Broken Arrow.
Shawnee’s footballers are guaranteed to stay in the 6A ranks at least through the 2011 season.
Brown welcomes one talented newcomer. Darrell Parker, who transferred to Shawnee from Wewoka last Christmas, should play an integral role. The 5-foot-11-inch, 195-pounder will likely be a factor both offensively (running back) and defensively (linebacker).
“He’s really fast and strong,” Brown said of Parker. “I think he will play on both sides of the ball.”
Brown said three of Parker’s teammates could also be two-way performers. Jeremy Barrientos should line up at fullback and defensive end while Cooper Ansell will serve as a wide receiver and outside linebacker.
Hunter Holley will likely see action as both a receiver and free safety.
Senior Brayle Brown, son of Billy Brown, is one of the state’s touted quarterbacks and could also be utilized defensively in special situations.
