Six down and four to go.
When Week No. 10 of the regular season wrapped up Friday night, six area teams bid adieu.
Shawnee, Chandler, McLoud and Macomb were eliminated from playoff consideration before they ever took the field Friday. Class 3A Bethel and 2A Meeker were still in the postseason hunt when they readied for home-field battles against Bristow and Holdenville.
Bethel fell to Bristow, 21-7, and Meeker was blitzed by Holdenville, 56-28.
The Wildcats of first-year head coach Eddie Paul concluded the season at 4-6 overall and 3-3 in District 3A-4. Bethel and Little Axe finished in a fourth-place district tie at 3-3 but the latter earned the playoff berth by virtue of the point system. For its achievement, Little Axe must face undefeated Heritage Hall, led by Barry Sanders, Jr., in Friday’s first round of the playoffs.
Meeker, 6-4 overall, finished fifth outright in District 2A-5 at 3-3.
The top four finishers in each district earned playoff berths
Four area teams — Tecumseh, Maud, Seminole and Prague — survived the cut and will be extending their seasons Friday night.
Only Maud, the District C-4 champion at 8-0, earned a first-round host berth. The Tigers will square off against Medford, the fourth-place finisher in C-3.
Maud, which has captured 37 straight district victories dating back to the 2006 season, has recorded four straight district championships. But the Tigers have been ousted every season in the first round by a C-3 representative, including a 34-14 decision to Covington-Douglas in 2009.
Medford finished at 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the district this season.
Of the three other area survivors, Prague faces the shortest opening-round road trip. Newcastle’s Racers, runner-up to Heritage Hall in 3A-3, will entertain Prague, whch tied Bristow for second place in 3A-4 at 4-2. Bristow earned a host berth.
Prague, 4-6 overall, concluded the regular season with a 56-26 romp over Star Spencer.
Newcastle is 7-3 overall.
Tecumseh, the fourth-place occupant in Class 4A-2 at 4-3, faces a formidable first-round test opposite host Clinton, the 4A-1 champion at 7-0 and possessor of a 9-1 overall mark.
Clinton, coached by Shawnee product Mike Lee, has captured seven state championships since 1996.
The Red Tornadoes will be taking on a Tecumseh crew that finished the regular campaign at 5-5.
For the 26th straight season, Seminole and head coach Mike Snyder are part of the playoff package. After dropping its first two District 3A-8 games of the year, Snyder and company captured their final five contests to finish third at 5-2 and earn the right to play at Keys (Park Hill) Friday night.
Keys and Beggs finished atop 3A-7 at 5-1 but Beggs earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of a head-to-head victory.
Seminole, which finished the regular season with a 52-21 rout of Eufaula, will enter the battle with an 8-2 record.
All of the kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
