Shawnee battled hard against a tough Broken Arrow team but was unable to keep up with the Tigers’ high-powered offense and fell 63-13 Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
“Sometimes, the score doesn’t reflect the type of game you play,” said Broken Arrow coach Steve Spavital. “Those Shawnee players battled all night long.”
Quarterback Wolf Kienzle came up with some big plays to get Shawnee (3-7, 1-6) on the scoreboard. Kienzle took a quarterback draw 78 yards to the Broken Arrow (8-2, 6-1) 2-yard line. He ran over the Broken Arrow defender but couldn’t stay in bounds as he was attempting to hurdle the defender. On the next play, Davontay Cross scored on a 2-yard touchdown run.
Later in the second quarter, Kienzle successfully converted a fake punt by outrunning the Broken Arrow defense to the edge. Shawnee’s offense was unable to keep the drive going and was forced to punt. The additional yardage did give Shawnee an advantage in field position that paid dividends.
Broken Arrow received the ball on the 10-yard line after the punt. On the first play, Shawnee cornerback Theo Berry intercepted quarterback Todd Naftzger and scored on a 15-yard return.
Kienzle carried 16 times for 129 yards. He gained a lot of tough yards after contact. He was less effective passing the ball, completing eight of his 21 passes for 20 yards. However, several well-thrown balls were dropped or tipped away at the last moment.
Cross added 13 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown.
Shawnee running back Jeremy Barrientos carried the first play of the game and left with an apparent ankle injury. Barrientos did not play the rest of the game.
Broken Arrow played without starting quarterback and OU commitment Archie Bradley. He was held out for precautionary reasons due to a nagging shoulder injury.
Broken Arrow will host Bartlesville next week in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
