Three Savages rushed for more than 120 yards each as Tecumseh ran over Santa Fe South, 47-13, Friday and into the Class 4A playoffs.
“We’re in ‘the dance’,” Tecumseh head coach Greg George said. “There’s 16 teams in the (4A) dance and we’re one of ‘em. That’s what’s important.”
The Savages, who finished fourth in District 2, will travel to Clinton next Friday to face the Red Tornadoes, the top finisher in District 1.
Tecumseh (5-5 overall, 4-3 in district) earned the spot by rushing for 392 yards Friday. Keith Longhorn, Kyle Fowler and Julian Tramble led the way with 125, 124 and 122 yards, respectively.
In total yardage, the Savages overwhelmed their guests, 464-132.
“Defensively, we were outstanding tonight, holding them to 13 points,” George said.
The Saint Bernards (better known simply as the Saints) were coming off a 46-point performance against Cushing. Santa Fe South (3-7, 1-6) had other outputs this fall of 49 and 41 points and was averaging 27.4 points per game.
Tecumseh’s defensive dominance showed in other ways than the score. In the first half, Santa Fe South had 10 total yards (19 passing and -9 rushing). The Saints didn’t achieve a first down until 5:50 was left in the second quarter. At halftime, the visitors had two first downs and zero points as Tecumseh led, 18-0.
The Savages scored touchdowns on their first two possessions. Fowler, the THS quarterback, ended a 14-play drive with a 2-yard TD run. Fowler had 41 rushing yards in the 71-yard march.
Longhorn got into the scoring act next, rumbling 24 yards to the end zone with 1:38 left in the first quarter.
Tecumseh’s second-quarter score came after a partially-blocked punt that gave the Savages the ball at the Saints’ 42. Nine plays later, Fowler, a senior, had his second TD of the night on a 1-yard sneak.
Scoring for both teams picked up in the second half. Tecumseh’s lead grew to 34-0 in the third quarter after Fowler’s 23-yard TD pass to fellow senior Francisco Hukill and Julian Tramble’s 28-yard TD run. Tramble’s trek included a highlight-worthy stiff-arm of a Saints defender at the 10-yard line.
Santa Fe South got on the scoreboard late in the quarter when quarterback Jameson Ballinger found Abraham Luna for a 14-yard scoring strike.
In the fourth quarter, Longhorn, another THS senior, scored his second and third touchdowns with runs of 12 and 1 yards. In between, the Saints had another TD pass.
Even though it was easily the coldest night of the season, turnovers weren’t a real issue. The teams lost one fumble each.
Tecumseh finished with 72 passing yards as Fowler connected on six of 12 tosses. Hukill had four of the receptions for 62 yards.
Santa Fe South, which normally features a prolific passing attack, had 110 yards through the air. Ballinger was 12-of-24, but had five straight incompletions in the third quarter.
“I’m just really proud of the team, the way they played on Senior Night,” George said.
