The boys from Bethel kick-started the South’s reign Friday night as the North was stuck with a 35-12 loss in the 17th annual Wrangler Bowl at Seminole High School.
Playing as the South’s quarterback, Bethel’s Clint Duncan put the first points on the board with a 1-yard keeper with 5:35 remaining in the first quarter. His former Wildcat teammate and South teammate Friday — Stephen Bedwell — was next with his 2-yard scoring carry with 9:43 to go in the first half.
That, coupled with back-to-back PAT successes from Wewoka’s Dominik Wehbrink, gave the South a 14-0 advantage. Wehbrink went on to nail 100 percent of his point-after boots on the night.
Duncan was awarded the South’s offensive MVP honor, while Seminole’s Adam Kuehner was named the South’s most valuable defensive player.
The South built on its early lead and put the North in a 21-0 halftime hole when Seminole’s Josh Worley scooped a backfield fumble and carried it 70 yards with 3:56 left in the first half.
With 2:10 to go in the third, Robby Dryden of Little Axe scored the first of his two touchdowns on the night, and the South led 28-0.
The North avoided a shutout when Tecumseh’s Kyle Fowler, serving as QB, found Harrah’s Derek Baez in the right corner of the end zone for a 9-yard TD catch on 4th-and-7. The two-point conversion attempt was stopped.
Dryden struck again for the South with 5:02 left to play, this time from 20 yards out, with a diving score into the left corner. The Fowler-Baez duo ended the scoring three minutes later on a third-down, 26-yard hookup.
Fowler earned offensive MVP honors for the North, while Harrah’s Ryan Brashier was named defensive MVP.
The MVP awards were given in honor of Larry Minihan, a Seminole High School graduate and longtime supporter of Seminole athletics.
Other Tri-County standouts in Friday’s game were Shawnee’s Hunter Holley and Cooper Ansell. Holley, playing quarterback in the first half for the North, connected with Ansell for a 36-yard completion on the North’s first play from scrimmage on the night.
Coaches for the North team Friday were the Wetumka High School staff, and the South’s coaches were the Wewoka High School staff.
All proceeds from the game go to the Seminole High School athletic department.
