Shawnee has discovered first hand this week that evening daylight time is becoming a rare commodity.
Tuesday, the Wolves — preparing for their first-round playoff game with Altus Friday night — started their workout on the practice field.
But the practice was concluded under the Jim Thorpe Stadium lights.
“We had good practices Monday and Tuesday,” Shawnee head coach Billy Brown said. “Monday, we had a lot of learning stuff. Tuesday, we were in full pads and worked on both our running game and the Altus running game.”
Shawnee, ranked first in Class 5A and possessor of a 10-0 record, will be up against an Altus squad that is 4-6.
“They are the best 4-6 team I’ve ever seen,” Brown said.
Altus has two one-point setbacks, including a 15-14 non-district decision to Class 6A playoff participant Lawton. The Bulldogs also dropped a 10-0 non-district decision to Lawton Eisenhower, another 6A playoff squad.
Altus finished fourth in District 5A-1 with a 3-4 record.
“It’s kind of a scary team to play in the first round because they have had a lot of close losses,” Brown said. “El Reno was their only big loss this season.”
El Reno pinned a 22-3 loss on Altus in the fourth game of the season.
Shawnee, fresh from its first undefeated regular season since 1973, will regain the services of starting running back Jordan Acock. Acock, after playing in the first nine games, was held out of the Capitol Hill contest because of a bruise on his foot.
“Jordan could have played last week if we had needed him,” Brown said.
Acock has scored 19 rushing touchdowns while accumulating 850 yards on 134 attempts.
“From here on out, we don’t have any room for errors,” Brown said. “Turnovers and penalties have to be limited.”
Brown said the Wolves are in good overall physical condition entering the playoffs.
Postseason Tidbits
