PONCA CITY — Shawnee tennis coach Terry Woodward was pleased with the performance of his squads Tuesday at the Ponca City Tournament.
Shawnee’s girls finished second in the eight-team field, trailing only champion Jenks. Edmond Santa Fe and Muskogee were tied for third.
The Lady Wolves went 7-4 on the day while posting second-place finishes at No. 1 singles (Bailey Calder), No. 2 singles (Niki Haddad) and No. 1 doubles (Taylor Haddad-Cydney Ramirez).
Calder defeated entries from Edmond Santa Fe and Muskogee before suffering a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Julian Siegler of Jenks in the finals.
Niki Haddad also came up short against Jenks in the finals, as did Taylor Haddad and Ramirez.
Taylor Thompson and Callie Hollis, Shawnee’s No. 2 doubles entry, shook off a second-round loss to Jenks to defeat Muskogee and claim third place.
“I thought the girls performed well,” Woodward said. “We used the same lineup at Ponca City that we had at Carl Albert to see how we stacked up against Class 6A teams. We are making strides but we still need to be more consistent.”
On the boys’ side, Shawnee was led by No. 1 singles performer Kenton McGalliard. McGalliard upended Choctaw and Muskogee opponents before losing a 5-7, 1-6 decision to Gray Whitman of Jenks.
“Kenton just keeps improving,” Woodward said. “He had another good tournament. He played Whitman very close in the finals.”
Bryce Jones lost his first-round match, but came back and posted two victories to claim fifth place at No. 2 singles.
Both Shawnee doubles teams — Amar Chandra and Anthony Davis at No. 1 and Garrett Hadley and Thomas Whitmore at No. 2 — went 2-1 on the day en route to third-place finishes.
Jenks captured the boys’ championship with Shawnee and Edmond Santa Fe tied for second. Edmond Memorial and Muskogee tied for third.
