The Shawnee Lady Wolves finished the 2009 portion of the basketball campaign with an impressive 68-24 romp of the visiting Noble Lady Bears Friday night at the Shawnee High School Performing Arts and Athletic Center.
The Lady Wolves wasted little time in setting the tone, as they forced Noble into 13 first-half turnovers with their smothering full-court press.
“That (press) is our mainstay,” said Shawnee head coach Wendi Wells. “If we don’t press, we are in trouble.”
No trouble was found.
The Lady Wolves parlayed seven first-quarter turnovers into nine points in building a comfortable 23-9 first-quarter lead. Also shining for Shawnee was the first-quarter three-point shooting. The Lady Wolves hit four treys in the first eight minutes. Sophomore Kelsee Grovey hit two of those while Kaylee Allen and freshman Mya Tramble added one each.
Shawnee continued with the pressure in quarter No. 2 to take a 36-13 lead into the half.
On offense, senior post Lindsey James got rolling. James scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the second quarter.
“Lindsey had a great game tonight,” said Wells. “She was very aggressive with the ball.”
The second half proved to be much more of the same with Shawnee scoring, and the Lady Bears giving them plenty of opportunity to do so. Noble committed nine second-half turnovers which put their game total at 22 — just two shy of tying their point total of 24.
Shawnee out-scored Noble 16-9 in the third quarter to up the ante to 52-22.
Grovey also hit double-digit scoring with 13 points. “Kelsee has been working on being more aggressive with the ball,” said Wells. Grovey hit three treys in the mismatch.
In the fourth quarter, Shawnee’s reserves took over and didn’t miss a beat, outscoring Noble 16-2.
Brittany Stevenson and Tramble each added eight points for the Lady Wolves, who improved to 5-1 on the season.
All 13 players that suited up for the Lady Wolves saw court time with 10 of them registering a score in the clash.
Shawnee is off for the holidays and will see its next action on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
