Faced with the chore of finishing in the top seven teams to qualify for the state meet, Shawnee came in sixth Saturday at a regional meet.
“The girls came up big today,” Shawnee cross country head coach Mark Heard said. “We had to finish in the top seven teams to advance to state. I’m real pleased with their effort.
“We seem to have found our rhythm at the right time.”
The state meet is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Edmond’s Mitch Park.
Miranda Dent was Shawnee’s top finisher, coming in 28th with a time of 13:28 on the 3,200-meter course. Fellow sophomore Jessica Cousins was 34th with a 13:39 effort and senior Allison Burger was 45th at 14:02.
Other finishers for Shawnee were junior Sarita Jenkins, 48th at 14:18; freshman Lexi Crowe, 49th at 14:22; junior Bethany Hall, 65th at 14:58 and freshman Katelyn Downs, 89th at 17:53.
There were 16 schools at the meet, including regional champion Edmond North with 52 points. Runner-up Westmoore finished with 57 points, followed by Edmond Memorial in third place with 68. Edmond Santa Fe was fourth at 111, followed by Mustang with 121 and Shawnee with 204. Norman was the final regional team to advance to the state meet with 211 points.
Shawnee’s boys, with four freshmen out of their top six runners, failed to qualify for the state meet after finishing 15th in a 16-team field.
Junior James Coppock came in 60th with a time of 19:02. Other Shawnee finishers were freshman Alex Wilson, 78th at 20:15; freshman Kyle rRogers, 81st at 20:29; junior Aaron Bushong, 86th at 20.52; freshman Jon Matanane, 87th at 209:55 and freshaman Cory Smith, 105th at 23:41.
“The boys ran the best they have all season,” Heard said. “This is a young, inexperienced team and they made big improvements with each week. I’m looking forward to next season, with everyone returning and a good incoming freshman group.The 2010 team will be much improved.”
