With two weeks remaining in the 2009 regular season, four Tri-County teams carry top-10 credentials and a combined record of 31-1.
Shawnee, 8-0 and seeking its first undefeated regular season since 1973, is ranked first (okrankings.com) in Class 5A.
The Wolves will travel to Noble Friday night to face a Bear squad that is just 1-7 overall and 1-4 in District 5A-2. Noble earned its initial win last Friday with a 48-7 decision over Capitol Hill.
Tecumseh, 7-1 overall and 4-1 in district play, is ranked eighth in 4A. The Savages will entertain top-ranked and 8-0 Glenpool Friday night.
Chris Elerick’s Stroud Tigers, 8-0, are ranked second in Class A while Maud’s Tigers, also 8-0, are the third-ranked team in Class C.
Stroud will entertain Minco in a non-district clash Friday while Maud will get an early start on the weekend by hosting Canadian Thursday. Both kickoffs are slated for 7:30 p.m.

Through eight games, Shawnee senior linebacker Keldin Choat is his squad’s leading tackler with 75, including five quarterback sacks. Leif Lena is Shawnee’s second-leading tackler with 55, followed by Beau Davis with 50 and Tanner Heatley with 49.
Hunter Holley, a 6-foot-3-inch, 185-pound Shawnee junior, has six interceptions. That ties him for the 5A lead with El Reno’s Matt Pruitt.

The McAlester squad that battled Shawnee toe-to-toe in a preseason scrimmage is knotted for the District 5A-4 top spot at 5-0. McAlester is also 8-0 overall.

It’s likely that Shawnee will face either 10th-ranked Lawton MacArthur or unranked Deer Creek in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs in Shawnee. MacArthur and Deer Creek are tied for third place in 5A-1 with 3-2 records.
MacArthur ousted Shawnee from last year’s playoffs with a 34-0 first-round bombardment. Deer Creek has fallen to Shawnee in both 2008 (35-8) and 2009 (46-19) non-district, regular-season matchups.

There are 27 Oklahoma high school football squads possessing 0-8 records. Two districts, 5A-3 and A-8, have two winless teams apiece. Skiatook and Rogers are winless in 5A-3 while Hulbert and Okay are 0-8 in A-8.
Riverside, a District 2A-3 member, has surrendered more points (386) than any other team in Class 6A through Class A.

Other Friday games involving Tri-County teams are Seminole (2-3, 3-5) at Cushing (2-3, 2-6); Prague (3-2, 3-5) at Holdenville (1-4, 3-5); Meeker (2-3, 4-4) at Bethel (2-3, 2-6); Okemah (3-2, 6-2) at Chandler (4-1, 4-4); and Cleveland (1-4, 2-6) at McLoud (1-4, 1-7).
