Despite a sloppy, wet field and a determined home team, Shawnee’s Wolves clinched the District 5A-2 title Friday night with a 38-14 toppling of Noble.
The win moves Shawnee’s record to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the district, and keeps the Wolves’ hopes alive for their first unbeaten season in more than three decades.
Shawnee assistant coach Kelly Parsons thought the performance lacked a little, but was pleased nonetheless with another mark on an unblemished campaign.
“I thought we played pretty flat. We weren’t ready to take it to them, and it showed,” Parsons said. “The field didn’t help us any. It was tough on our timing routes and our passing game.”
Shawnee quarterback Brayle Brown was successful on seven of 16 tosses for 221 yards and three scores, but was pilfered twice. His first touchdown throw of the game was a 43-yard success to Leon Davis on the Wolves’ first play from scrimmage.
All total, Shawnee came away with 452 yards of offense while Noble managed 367. The Bears were limited to 54 rushing yards and 39 passing yards in the first half, but quarterback Will Starr made up for that in the second half with close to 190 yards through the airways.
Starr suffered one interception while connecting on 13 of 27 tries.
The Wolves led 7-0 after the first quarter, but extended that lead to 13-0 when Brown met up with Keldin Choat on a 2-yard scoring reception with 41 seconds remaining in the first half.
Brown connected with Saulyer Saxon for a 53-yard success early in the third to make it 19-0 Shawnee, but the Bears responded less than three minutes later when Damien McBride snagged a 26-yard scoring toss from Starr.
The teams traded additional third-quarter punches, the first being a 41-yard TD scoot from Shawnee’s Jeremy Barrientos. Starr punched one in for the Bears from a yard out to end the hosts’ share of the scoring, and Shawnee led 25-14 going into the final 12 minutes of play.
Brown skirted through the middle of the defense to hit paydirt from 19 yards out, making it 31-14 with 10:16 left to play, and Beau Davis shrugged off a myriad of tacklers for a 40-yard rushing score in the last minute and a half to bring up the final.
Beau Davis came out in the second half and provided 63 yards and the score on three rushing attempts.
Noble threatened to shave Shawnee’s lead again in the waning seconds as Starr completed back-to-back-to-back passes totaling 57 yards and a first-and-goal at the Wolves’ 9. An incomplete fourth toss made it second-and-goal, and Cooper Ansell crushed Starr 22 yards deep to bring up third-and-goal at the 31.
Starr met up with McBride for a 25-yard completion on the ensuing play, but it was too little, too late as the clock ran dry.
“Noble had a good game plan — keep the ball out of our hands,” Parsons said. “I’m glad to get out of her 9-0.”
The Bears chewed up possession time in the second half, holding onto the ball for close to 10 minutes in the third quarter.
Individually for Shawnee, Brown rushed for 74 yards and a score on 10 carries, while Jordan Acock posted 50 yards on 12 totes. Saxon led in the receiving department with 121 yards and a TD on three catches.
Gabrion Frazier recorded 51 yards on one catch.
The Wolves will conclude the regular season on the road opposite Capitol Hill next Friday night. The Redskins, after a 58-0 loss to Guthrie Friday, will meet Shawnee with an 0-9 overall record.
