Turney sparks Macomb boys to opening win

MACOMB - James Turney registered a double-double with 34 points and 14 rebounds as the Macomb Hornets opened the 2009-10 basketball season with a 72-55 triumph over Sasakwa Friday night.
Dayle Whitlock and Cody Quirk added 12 points apiece for the Hornets, who led 24-13 after the first quarter and had a 32-27 advantage at the break. Duane Childress also chipped in seven points for the winners.
Jon Harjo and P.J. Poaspybitty paced Sasakwa with 11 points apiece.
In the girls game, Cerissa Palmer poured in 26 points to fuel Sasakwa to a 66-49 win.
C.J. Palmer and Wynter Wind added 14 and 12 points respectively for Sasakwa.
Bethanie Hardy and Naomi Bluford led Macomb with 17 points each. Hardy also ended up with a double-double as she pulled down 11 rebounds. Tabitha DelosSantos added 10 points in a losing cause.
Sasakwa led 23-8 after the opening period and held a 36-23 halftime lead.
Both Macomb teams hit the road Tuesday for a pair of games at Maud.
