Top-ranked Glenpool lived up to its Class 4A ranking and then some as the Warriors rolled up 440 yards of offense and hammered the Tecumseh Savages 49-6 in a District 4A-2 battle Friday night.
Of the 440 yards, 350 came on the ground as Glenpool averaged 9.5 yards per carry on the night, led by Marco Nelson. The Tulsa commitment netted 102 yards on only six carries and scored three times.
Nelson, who scored off his first two carries of the night, ripped off a 46-yard, untouched run with 9:45 to go in the opening quarter and, after an interception, added a 15-yard TD run with 8:22 left in the first period.
The Warriors, 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the district, led 28-0 after one quarter and went on to a 42-6 halftime advantage.
“We ran into a buzzsaw. They are unbelievably good everywhere. We struggled in all areas, but there’s a reason for that, playing the No. 1 team in 4A,” said Tecumseh head coach Greg George. “(Nelson) is a stud. He is definitely on another level.”
The Savages, who fell to 7-2 and 4-2, managed just 220 yards of total offense, 175 of which came through the air. Glenpool limited the Savages to 45 rushing yards on 25 attempts.
Eight of Tecumseh’s rushing plays led to negative yardage while two more netted zero yards.
The Savages picked up their only score, using a trick play to open the second quarter. Tecumseh quarterback Kyle Fowler handed off to Jackson Ryan, who launched a 46-yard scoring strike to Chris Nunnally with just 10 seconds gone in the period.
Nunnally caught eight passes for 117 yards, including a 54-yarder late in the game.
The Savage defense did turn back a Warrior scoring threat late in the third quarter when Glenpool backup quarterback Connor Ferrell connected with Deryk Ronk on an apparent TD pass, but the ball was jarred loose by Nunnally and Ryan Craighead picked up the ball in the end zone and returned it to the 12-yard line.
Tecumseh helped Glenpool by turning the ball over five times, three by interceptions and two via fumbles.
Fowler was 11-of-22 passing for 126 yards, but suffered with the three interceptions.
After Nelson’s two opening carries for touchdowns made it 13-0, Tecumseh was forced to punt after its third possession. A Warrior fumble on first down and recovery by Nunnally injected some life into the Savages.
But a Tecumseh fumble on the next play at the Warrior 44 set the stage for Glenpool’s third scoring drive of the night just four plays later as Drew Molencupp scored from 21 yards out. Quarterback Derek Allen then ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 21-0 with 4:40 still to go in the first quarter.
Another Savage fumble led to a 36-yard scoring pass from Allen to Anthony Haley on the very next play as the score ultimately became 28-0 with 4:18 remaining in the first quarter.
Glenpool went on to score off two of its three possessions to take the 36-point halftime cushion.
Molencupp added 69 yards on eight carries while Alton Adkins finished with 61 yards on eight attempts. Ferrell added 48 yards on just two carries, including a long 44-yarder.
Tecumseh, which has wrapped up third place in the district and will hit the road for the first round of the playoffs in two weeks, closes out the regular season next Friday at Cleveland.
Glenpool will have a showdown with Star Spencer for the district championship next week. Those two teams have locked up the top two spots in the district and will host first-round games to launch the playoffs.
