A Meeker contestant took over the lead in the barrel racing here Tuesday during the third performance of the International Finals Youth Rodeo.
Lauren Underwood, 16, who is from Meeker but attends Bethel High School, ran the barrel pattern in 16.514 seconds during Tuesday morning’s performance. That put her ahead of Snyder, Colo., barrel racer Hayden Segelke, who was sitting in second following a run of 16.638 seconds.
Segelke, who also is competing in the goat tying here this week, took over the lead when she tied her goat in 8.2 seconds Monday night.
Underwood, who will be a junior in the fall, is competing in her second IFYR. The daughter of Rene and Kurt Underwood, she said prior to the start of competition that “last year wasn’t a good year. Me and my horse had a falling out during the first run last year and he had sore feet in the first round of the barrels.”
She will compete again in the event during Thursday night’s action.
Underwood is also competing in the pole bending this week and is riding the same horse for both events. She also is interviewing later today for one of the six youth director positions for this coming year.
Heather Hassler, from Madisonville, Texas, took over the lead in the pole bending competition with a run of 20.541 during Tuesday morning’s performance. She bumped Emily Miller, the defending pole bending champion, from the top spot in the event.
Miller, from Ingalls, Kan., had taken over the lead following Monday night’s action.
Contestants found the three rodeo arenas drier and much more to their liking Tuesday. During Monday morning’s rain-drenched performance, the rain began falling about an hour after the action started. Conditions were soggy at best.
No rain fell Monday night, and the forecasters are predicting hot, dry weather for the remainder of the week with mercury readings in the high 90s, approaching the century mark toward the weekend.
Nicole Sweazea, Mountainair, N.M., is sitting atop the breakaway roping standings with a time of 2.3 seconds. She competed during Tuesday morning’s action.
Colby Walkoviak, Anderson, Texas, remains on top in the tie down calf roping with a time of 8.7 seconds. He competed during Monday morning’s opening performance, and his time had held up through Tuesday morning’s action.
Ethan Shelley, Gila, N.M. steer wrestler, recorded a time of 4.2 seconds to forge a tie with Checotah bulldogger Riley Duvall, who took the early lead on Monday morning. Shelley’s time came during Monday night’s action.
Dylan Henson, from Bloomfield, N.M., scored a 74 in the saddle bronc riding and has claimed the lead after three performances of the IFYR. He was one point ahead of Lufkin, Texas bronc rider Ty Kirkland, who has a 73 and two points ahead of defending IFYR saddle bronc champion Will Abshure from Ward, Ark. who scored a 72 Tuesday night.
Bareback riders Bill Tutor, from Huntsville, Texas, and James “Colt” Kitaif, Tylertown, Miss., who shared the early lead at 74, find themselves in a three-way tie for first. Rayne, La. bareback rider Mason Laviolette scored a 74 during Monday evening’s action.
Defending bareback champion Marvin Alderman, Jr., from Idabel, is tied for seventh after an opening round score of 69.
Chase Outlaw, Tilly, Ark., who grabbed the bullriding lead with an 81 during Monday’s initial performance, remains on top. But Sage Kimsey, Strong City, Okla., bull rider, is right on his heels in second with an 81.
A pair of Texans, Aaron Macy, from Post, and Landon Williams, Midland, are in first place in the team roping with a time of 5.9 seconds.
First-round action at the IFYR will conclude with this morning’s performance, which begins at 9 a.m. The second round starts with tonight’s performance at 7:30. Friday night’s action will finish up the second round.
The top 15 in each of the 10 events, including ties, will qualify for Saturday morning’s performance which starts at 10 a.m.
