The Dale boys and girls, with a combined 34 state tournament appearances, will up that count to 36 today when Class 2A play begins at two sites.
Dale’s boys, with nine previous tournament appearances, will be back at state for the first time since 1996. Under coach Jeff Edmonson this season, the Pirates have produced a 22-6 record, with all of the losses coming to ranked teams.
“We’re pumped up and ready to play,” said Edmonson, who will guide his third-seeded squad against the Hulbert Riders (24-3) in an 8:30 p.m. first-round clash at Norman High School.
Hulbert will be making just its second state tourney appearance, and first since 1977.
Dale will start five seniors, including leading scorer Jimmy Doolin (17.2) and Darin Greene (10.9). Turner Coon is at 9.3 points per game.
Hulbert has four double-figure scorers, including senior Brett Walker at 16.
Dale didn’t play any of the other seven state tournament teams during the regular season. The Pirates, who are looking for their first state title, have three runners-up trophies.
Dale Girls
The Lady Pirates of coach Benny Burnett have been a state tournament staple with 25 appearances. Dale (24-4) will begin its bid for a seventh state championship — and first since 1991 — when it opposes Newkirk (22-4) at 3:30 p.m. today at State Fair Arena.
Senior Brenna Burnett, who has more than 1,500 points in her prep career, is Dale’s top scorer with a 17-points-per-game average. Two other seniors, Kaylee Wilkins and Linlee Blevins, are averaging 13.2 and 10.3 points, respectively.
Newkirk, last year’s state runner-up, has four starters back. Junior Megan Schieber is the only Tiger double-figure scorer at 15.2.
Dale was ranked No. 1 most of the year but had to come back through the area tournament losers bracket to earn a state tournament berth.
The Lady Pirates’ state titles came in 1978, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1990 and 1991. In 1988 and 2000, Dale was the state runner-up.
Prague Girls
Prague, ninth in the final 3A rankings and unseeded at state, will square off against fourth-seeded Tishomingo (24-2) at 2 p.m. today at Choctaw High School.
Prague, 24-3, prides itself on defense with just one player, senior Jessica Stotler, in double figures at 10.5 points per game.
Junior Hillary Dixon averages 8.6 points for the Lady Red Devils, who will be making their first state trip since 2007 and their 13th overall.
Tishomingo senior Lacey Dickerson and junior Brittney Treas both average 16 points. Tishomingo’s last state action came in 2003.
Prague’s girls captured state championships in 1993 and 2000.
