HENRYETTA — In a contest riddled with turnovers, Prague’s Red Devils notched third place in District 2A-5 with a 47-24 triumph over Henryetta Friday night.
Now playoff bound, the Red Devils will face an undetermined foe in next week’s postseason first round.
All total, the ball was fumbled away three times by each team, and Henryetta quarterback Cody McKinney was picked off twice. Prague’s Blake Hill returned a fumble 35 yards for a score in the waning seconds of the first quarter, but the Knights secured a little payback and used Luke Allen’s 60-yard third-quarter fumble return to avoid a shutout.
Prague dished out 16 first downs and 394 yards of total offense while limiting the hosts to just 98. Henryetta had seven first downs, and their offensive total included 68 yards on the ground and 30 through the air.
The bulk of Prague’s onslaught was posted on the run as the Red Devils kept the ball out of the skies throughout the second half. Quarterback Clint Simek secured 53 yards while completing five of eight tosses and suffering one interception, all in the first two quarters of play.
After starting in good field position on the game’s opening possession, the Red Devils punctuated a six-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown courtesy of Simek. The sophomore ultimately finished the night with four TDs and 107 yards on 14 totes, including a 59-yard scamper that put the guests up 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
Prague led 21-0 at the end of one quarter and 33-0 at halftime. Simek netted three of his four TDs in the first half, and ended his share of the scoring on a 15-yard success with 9:35 remaining in the third quarter.
The Red Devils had a 40-0 cushion when Henryetta’s Allen snagged his fumble return.
Freshman Daelen McClendon punched his way into the end zone from a yard out to put the Red Devils up 47-8 with 2:17 to go in the third, thus ending Prague’s share of the scoring, but Allen struck again for Henryetta. The senior ran the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to make the score 47-16.
The Knights ended the scoring on a successful 28-yard halfback pass from Sebatian Delecal to Jimmy Black with 1:24 left in the game.
McClendon posted 66 yards and the score on 12 rushes, all in the second half.
Prague’s Brad Crawford caught two passes for 22 yards, while teammate Austin Wilson snagged three for 31 yards. Crawford also registered an interception.
Austin Wilson finished the night with 59 yards on 10 rushes, and Tyler Duncan came away with 41 yards and a touchdown on four attempts. Duncan registered a 35-yard run that set up Prague’s fourth touchdown of the night, and he later scored on a 3-yard run midway through the second quarter.
Hill served as quarterback during the second half, collecting 52 yards on six carries.
Prague ends the regular season at 5-5 overall and 5-2 against district opposition. The Knights end the 2009 season at 1-9, having beaten 2A-5 foe Beggs for their only win.
