DALE — The Pirates and Lady Pirates of Dale opened their 2009-10 hoops season on a winning note, toppling visiting Earlsboro Friday night.
The Lady Pirates overcame an early deficit to win 83-32, and the Pirates rode a 24-5 first-quarter lead to a 77-33 final. Dale’s teams are now 1-0 on the season, while the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats are 1-2.
Lady Pirates head coach Benny Burnett said Dale’s shooting was “horrendous” in the first quarter, “but the second and third quarters, we really picked it up.”
The Lady Pirates trailed 7-6 after one quarter, but forged ahead to a 38-13 halftime edge.
Brenna Burnett led Dale with 29 points — all scored in the second and third quarters. Kaylee Wilkins hit three treys in her 16-point contribution, and Linlee Blevins hit three while pitching in with 13 points.
Lorren Brannon was Earlsboro’s only double-digit shooter with 12.
All 16 of Dale’s Pirates played in the boys’ game, with 13 scoring points.
“They had trouble with our press,” said Dale head coach Jeff Edmondson. “We got off to a good start, and we substituted pretty freely.”
Jimmy Doolin and Turner Coon led the Pirates with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Austin Hopper led Earlsboro with 11.
Doolin and Braden Burnett each connected on three shots from three-point range, while Coon connected on one. Hopper also hit three from outside the arch.
“It was a good win,” Edmondson said. “Earlsboro had a couple of games under their belt. I was glad we came out sharp.”
The Pirates led 24-5 after the first quarter, and 41-14 at the break.
Dale will visit Latta Tuesday, with the girls playing at 6:30 p.m. The boys’ game will follow.
