Despite tallying an initial 13-0 lead, Shawnee’s eighth-ranked Wolves (Class 5A) fell to No. 3 Deer Creek (Class 5A) by a 30-28 count Tuesday in the Suburban Conference finals at the Shawnee High School Performing Arts and Athletic Center.

The Wolves led until the final showdown, but Tyson Follis pinned Shawnee’s Aaron Van Hook in 59 seconds in the heavyweight match to push the Antlers over the top.

“I though our kids really fought,” said SHS head coach Larry James. “We had a chance to knock off No. 3, and we didn’t get it done.
“We won a lot of close matches, but we gave up too many bonus points.”

The Wolves’ early edge was sparked by Bryce O’Connor’s 3-1 overtime decision of Deer Creek’s Scott Prescott at 106 pounds. Teammate Malique Little (113) followed with a 13-3 major decision over Bryan Smith, and Shawnee’s Michael Smith nipped Tyler Hicks 1-0 at 120 pounds.

Shawnee’s Kory Loveland (126) recorded a 4-2 overtime decision over Chris Dunlap to make it 13-0, but the Antlers cut the lead to 10 with Joe Bradbury’s 3-0 win over Matt Daniel at 132.

Shawnee won the next two matches — a 7-6 decision by Daylan Stuteville (138) and a 9-3 decision by Corey Todd (145) — before the Antlers registered back-to-back falls to shrink their deficit to 19-15.

The Wolves got their last two wins at 170 and 182, beginning with Walker Smith’s 6-5 decision over Deer Creek’s Ely Hooks. Gage Humphrey delivered Shawnee’s only win by fall, at 1:17 in the 182-pound bout.

This put the hosts up 28-15, but Deer Creek won out with two pins and a 3-1 decision.

“I was proud of our effort, but we just fell short,” James said. “We’ve got to win matches like that. We had an opportunity to take things away and we didn’t get it done.

“We should have won the dual.”

Shawnee will compete at dual state Feb. 11 in Yukon.
