A first-quarter dominance and a fourth-quarter touchdown were enough for Chandler to hold off Okemah, 35-21, in a District 2A-5 squabble Friday night.
The Lions, in moving to 5-1 in the district, jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter advantage on two touchdown runs by quarterback Brandon Cummings (21 and 5 yards) and a 29-yard scoring reception by Casey Barrier from Cummings.
Chandler upped the lead to 27-0 on a 22-yard, second-quarter reception by Barrier, only to watch Okemah pull within 27-14 at the intermission. Austin Peters of Okemah had scoring gallops of 14 and 30 yards.
On the final play of the opening half — and with Chandler inside the visitors’ 1-yard line — Okemah intercepted a pass in the end zone.
In the third quarter, Okemah cut the deficit to 27-21 when Matt Tucker sped 57 yards for a touchdown.
Chandler, however, got in the last salvo on a 73-yard scoring drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by Joe Hernandez on second down.
Chandler rushed for 241 yards while Okemah had 234.
Cummings connected on 7 of 14 passes for 138 yards. Contrastingly, Okemah collected just 23 passing yards.
Chandler head coach Neal Bacon said Beggs, which had been tied with Chandler for the district top spot. lost to Henryetta Friday night, giving the Lions undisputed possession of first place. Should Chandler prevail at Eufaula this Friday night, it would possess the district championship.
The Lions are 5-4 overall. “Offensively, we played well,” Chandler head coach Neal Bacon said. “We dominated the first quarter on both sides of the ball. When we went up 27-0, we kind of relaxed and let Okemah score twice.
“Brandon Cummings and T.J. Tillis had big nights running the ball for us. Our offensive line played well and we’ve had zero lost fumbles the last two weeks.”
