LATTA — Dale’s basketball crews moved to 2-0 on the season after road wins in Latta Tuesday evening.
The Lady Pirates withstood a late rally to win 42-38, and Class 2A’s No. 11 Pirates delivered a 63-45 upset to the No. 10 Panthers.
“It was a good win for us,” said Dale boys head coach Jeff Edmonson. “Latta’s a quality program, and to beat them in Latta is a real good job.”
Jimmy Doolin led the Pirates with 22 points.
“He did a great job of taking the ball to the hole,” Edmonson said. “He really stepped up and was a leader for us.”
Turner Coon pitched in with 11 points, and Darren Greene came up with 10.
The Pirates led 20-8 after one quarter, and 31-27 at intermission. Dale slugged out 20 points to Latta’s six in the third quarter en route to dropping the Panthers to 0-1.
The Lady Pirates enjoyed a 17-12 first-quarter edge before going on to lead 33-19 at halftime. The Lady Panthers bounced back and threatened to take the game, outscoring Dale 9-6 in the third quarter and 10-3 in the fourth.
“We played pretty good the first half, but in the second half we threw the ball away and didn’t execute,” said Lady Pirates head coach Benny Burnett.
Brenna Burnett scored 19 of her 22 points in the first half of the contest, and Kayla Wilkins scored 12 of her 14 in the first half. Linlee Blevins was the only other Lady Pirate to score, adding six points to the total.
Sara Miller led the Lady Panthers with 15.
Dale will host Amber-Pocasset Friday, with the girls tipping off at 6:30 p.m. The boys’ game will follow.
