MACOMB— The Macomb Hornets opened the 2010 baseball campaign with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Maud on Thursday. They opened the twinbill with a 7-0 win and followed it up with a 9-2 decision.
James Phelps got the win in the opener, pitching all five innings and striking out 11 Tigers in the process. He gave up just two walks and two hits in the contest.
Macomb had only two hits in the game but scored all seven unearned runs on a plethora of Maud walks and errors.
Ryan Howard sparked the Hornets in the nightcap with a 2-for-2 plate performance and a run batted in. Scotty Robinett earned the win on the mound. He pitched three innings and struck out six and did not give out any walks or hits.
Macomb (2-0) will be idle until after spring break when they will host Mason on Monday, March 22, at 5 p.m.
