OKLAHOMA CITY — The Dale Pirates’ quest for the Class 2A basketball championship hit a roadblock Friday night.
Talihina’s Jordan Eagleroad torched the Pirates’ defense in the State Fair Arena nets, giving the Golden Tigers a 58-34 win.
Eagleroad scored 28 points and hit six 3-pointers against several types of defense that the Pirates threw at him.
“They (Talihina) create a lot of matchup problems,” said Dale head coach Jeff Edmonson. “We’re disappointed, but I couldn’t be more proud of this bunch of seniors. We have eight seniors and five of them start for us.”
For the first eight minutes of play, Dale stood toe-to-toe with the taller, quicker Golden Tigers. Talihina led just 9-7 after the first quarter, but soon put Dale’s championship dreams to bed in the second.
The Golden Tigers outscored Dale 22-9 in the second quarter, and took a 31-16 lead into the half.
A 10-2 Talihina run in the first 2:48 of the second half cancelled any ideas the Pirates may have had about coming back.
Eagleroad, a 6-2 junior, was blazing hot. He scored against Dale’s man-to-man, 3-2 zone and also a 1-3-1 zone. He scored five first-quarter points and followed that up with 21 combined second- and third-quarter points.
Taggert Lockhart was the only other Talihina scorer to reach double figures with 14.
Dale was led by senior Jimmy Doolin, who poured in 16 points in his final outing with the Pirates. He scored nine of his team-high points in the first half.
Turner Coon ended his career with an eight-point night.
Dale finishes the season with a record of 23-7. Talihina will play for the gold ball tonight against the Pawnee Black Bears.
Other seniors finishing their careers with Dale were Dare Obasade, Zach Johnson, Dalton Streber, Cole Dickinson and Darin Greene.
