As suspected, there was little suspense as Shawnee culminated its first undefeated regular season in 36 years.
The Wolves, behind two pass interception touchdowns in the first three minutes, mauled Capitol Hill, 42-10, in a District 5A-2 game Thursday night at C.B. Speegle Stadium.
On the third play of the game, Brayle Brown returned an interception 40 yards for a TD. On Capitol Hill’s next snap, Saulyer Saxon stole a pass and sprinted 42 yards for a touchdown.
No Shawnee team since the 1973 state championship edition had gone 10-0 during the regular campaign.
Shawnee owned a 35-0 halftime advantage, then turned the game over to reserves in the second half.
Shawnee’s third touchdown came on a 2-yard run by Beau Davis in the first quarter.
The Wolves added two second-quarter touchdowns — a 30-yard reception by Nick Berry and a 17-yard reception by Saxon.
Capitol Hill got a third-quarter field goal and a fourth-quarter touchdown. The Redskins had scored just 26 points in their first nine games.
The Wolves, who entered the game averaging 455.22 total yards, easily the high-water mark in Class 5A, finished with 286. Carl Albert was second at 376.89.
Shawnee has tallied 451 points, a 45.1-point average.
Brown connected on seven of 12 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in one half of employment. The Wolves came into the contest as the second-most proficient passing squad in 5A, averaging 204.44.
Shawnee, also second in the 5A team rushing statistics (250.78 entering the game), chalked up 148 yards as reserve quarterback C.J. Hinex led the way with 66 on four carries. Davis added 32 yards on four carries.
Starting tailback Jordan Acock was sidelined with an injury.
Saxon was Shawnee’s pass reception leader with three for 50 yards, including a touchdown, in one half of play.
Capitol Hill, which concluded a miserable year at 0-10, including 0-7 in 5A-2, was outscored 476-36 by opponents.
The clock ran almost continuously, save for timeouts, in the second half.
Against Shawnee’s first-team defense in the opening half, Capitol Hill had 14 yards on 15 snaps.
Hinex had Shawnee’s only closing half touchdown on a 72-yard dash with 3:19 to play.
