NORMAN — In a thrilling 2A state quarterfinal with a little bit of everything, Dale rallied for a 71-69 overtime victory over Hulbert Thursday night at Norman High School.
The Pirates, who trailed 48-41 with five minutes remaining, earned a regulation-play tie at 59. Hulbert’s Richard Henson knocked down a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining for the tie.
Dale’s Turner Coon missed a long jumper at the buzzer after being knocked hard to the floor seconds before. No foul was called on the play, much to the chagrin of Dale head coach Jeff Edmonson.
Nine of Dale’s 12 overtime points came from the charity stripe with senior Jimmy Doolin hitting the winning two with 3.4 seconds left and the score tied at 69. Doolin was fouled on a drive inside the lane after Hulbert’s Dillon Brown banked in a 3-point field goal at the 9.7-second mark for a tie at 69. Brown then fouled out on Doolin’s drive to the bucket.
Hulbert was unable to get off a shot after Doolin’s free throws.
“I’ve never been in a game like this, especially one that had so much on the line,” Edmonson said. “We had kids hurt and they were still stepping up and making plays. We just wanted to make sure that anybody who paid $5 got their money’s worth.”
Dale advances to today’s 9 p.m. semifinals at State Fair Arena versus Talihina, a 68-44 quarterfinal victor over Mangum Thursday night.
Doolin, who was the game’s leading scorer with 26 points, canned nine of 11 free throws, including all four of his OT efforts. He also had Dale’s only overtime field goal.
Darin Greene of Dale tallied 19 points, two coming at the free throw line that gave the Pirates a 67-63 advantage. Greene converted after suffering legs cramps when he was fouled on the play.
Freshman Evan Anderson chipped in with nine points, six coming in the fourth quarter comeback. His driving layup made it 59-56 before Henson’s 3-pointer from the corner necessitated the overtime.
Dale, 23-6, hit 52.5 percent (21-of-40) of its field goals and 70.2 percent (26-of -37) of its free throws.
Hulbert was 48.9 percent (24-of-49) from the field but just 50 percent (12-of-24) from the line.
Hulbert, which ends the season at 24-4, missed four of its six overtime free throws.
Dale took just 13 first-half shots, making eight for 61.5 percent. The Pirates turned the ball over 13 times, including four straight possessions in the opening quarter as Hulbert claimed a 7-6 lead.
Doolin posted 12 first-half points, including two treys, as Hulbert took a 26-21 lead into the intermission.
Doolin scored the first half’s final two points of the half on a driving layup with :01 remaining.
Hulbert led 35-34 after three quarters.
Anderson pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
