Eight area squads entered the football playoffs last Friday night but only three emerged victorious.
In addition to Shawnee, two other area squads, Chandler and Stroud — both of whom are district champions — kept their seasons alive with victories.
Chandler, ranked 12th in Class 2A, mauled Spiro, 47-6. The Lions of head coach Neal Bacon, winners of five straight games, will oppose ninth-ranked Verdigris (8-3) Friday night (7:30) in a second-round test at Chandler.
Chandler is 7-4 on the year.
Verdigris blistered Colcord, 48-14, in the opening round.
Stroud, coached by Chris Elerick, upped its record to 11-0 with a 54-6 demolishment of Savanna.
The Tigers, seeking their first state title in four decades, will entertain Pawnee (9-2) Friday night at 7:30.
Stroud is ranked second while Pawnee is 12th.
Pawnee opened the playoffs with a 58-18 shellacking of Afton.
Eight second-round games are scheduled in both Class 2A and Class A. Those are the only two classes in Oklahoma in which the eventual state champion must capture five playoff victories.
In the other six Oklahoma classes — 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, B and C — the state champions must win four playoff encounters.
Clas 4A playoff entrants Tecumseh and Seminole were ousted last Friday night in road battles. Tecumseh finished the seson at 8-3 with a 49-0 loss to McGuinness while Seminole fell to top-ranked Weatherford, 34-14.
Class 2A participants Prague and Meeker also fell by the wayside. Prague had one of the most heartbreaking exits, losing on the road to Stigler, 55-48. Stigler’s seventh touchdown pass of the contest — with four seconds left — was the game winner.
Prague, which had a four-game winning streak snapped, finished the year at 5-6.
Meeker saw its season end at 6-5 with a 35-0 road setback to Heritage Hall. Meeker made the playoffs when Jones had to forgeit games because of the use of an ineligible player.
District C-4 champion Maud, 10-0 during the regular season, was eliminated with a 34-14 home loss to Covington-Douglas.
