With a playoff berth in the bag, the Meeker Bulldogs set its sights on trying to slow down the Millwood Falcons Friday night. Millwood’s quick strike capabilities proved too much for Meeker as they rolled to a 48-6 regular-season-ending win.
“We knew coming into the game that we didn’t match up well with them,” said Meeker head coach Mike Hedge. “They have players all over the field that can run.”
On the opening kickoff, Millwood junior Josh Turner fielded the kick at the Falcon 18-yard line and raced 82 yards for a 6-0 lead just 13 seconds into the contest.
Meeker then tried to respond as they drove to the Millwood 29, but on fourth-and-two came up a yard short. The Bulldogs took 6:33 off of the game clock but failed to put points on the board and the Falcons took advantage.
Millwood then drove 71 yards on 10 plays to increase the lead to 14-0 with 1:27 left in the opening quarter. Emilio Gatewood ended the drive on a one yard touchdown run.
Once again, the Bulldogs drove into Millwood territory, but a Caleb Martin fumble on the Falcon 26 ended the threat.
Meeker’s defense then buckled down and forced the Falcons into a three-and-out. Millwood dropped back to punt and had the attempt blocked at their 7-yard line and the Bulldogs capitalized.
It took three plays to cut the Millwood deficit to 14-6 with 6:43 left in the half. Martin scored on a 3-yard scamper.
The Bulldogs then kicked the ball away from Turner, but it wound up in the hands of Shevin Patton, who sped 71 yards for Millwood’s second kickoff return in as many tries. That jumped the score back to 21-6 with 6:31 left in the half.
Millwood, on its next possession, showed more speed. Tailback Gatewood went the distance from 62 yards out to end the first half scoring at 28-6.
The Bulldogs, in the second half, threatened to score just once but the drive ended on the Millwood 28 with 6:55 left in the game.
The Falcons scored on their first two possessions of the half to increase the advantage to 42-6 after three quarters of play. Their first score of the second half came on a 47-yard pass from Daniel Jackson to Turner and the second was on a Gatewood run from seven yards out.
The final score of the game came on a 32-yard fumble return by Dimitri Braggs.
The Bulldogs, who learned on Thursday that they were heading to the playoffs by virtue of their forfeit defeat of Jones, will travel to Heritage Hall next Friday night.
Meeker finished the regular season at 5-5 and ends the District 2A-2 season with a 4-3 mark.
