McALESTER — Shawnee let go an early one-run lead Friday, and left several runners stranded late en route to falling 4-2 to the host McAlester Buffaloes.
Leadoff batter Saulyer Saxon sent the game’s opening pitch over the fence for a 1-0 lead for the Wolves, but the Buffs answered and closed the first frame with a 2-1 edge.
The Wolves tied it at 2 in the top of the second, but a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning ended the scoring and left McAlester on top with the soon-to-be 4-2 final.
Saxon was later stranded at third, and a no-outs, bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the fourth came up empty after a pair of strikeouts and a groundout.
“We didn’t take advantage of our scoring opportunities,” said SHS assistant coach Matt Pierce.
The Wolves were also plagued by errors, committing five, while the Buffaloes never miscued.
Saxon ended the game at 2-for-3, as did Brayle Brown.
Starter Tanner Heatley took the loss for Shawnee, dropping him to 0-2 on the mound. The Wolves are 0-6.
McAlester’s Steve Mason moved to 1-2 with the pitching win.
Shawnee will host Moore at 7 p.m. March 19 as part of the Shawnee Festival.
